This congregation of the Daughters of Mary was created around 1800 , an eventful period of the French Revolution. Father Baudy, parish priest of Pesche - a Belgian village close to France - sees the religious ignorance of his parishioners. A daring project germinated in his priestly heart: to found a religious congregation with a view to teaching and educating the youth in a Christian way, especially poor children. This is why he called on a few young girls and a primary school for girls opened in Pesche on October 1, 1819. He gave them a rule of life and chose Françoise Lorsignol as responsible for this first group.

In 1835, Monsignor Bareth, Bishop of Namur approved the rule for the new institute and on May 8, the first three Daughters of Mary took their vows. Three novices are also admitted as candidates for religious life.

Thus was born a new institute officially recognized by the Church. It bears the name of Daughters of Mary of Pesche. The congregation responds to the call of many priests, parishes and municipalities.
She first creates:

  • primary schools, especially in the poor countryside and on the outskirts of towns in the dioceses of Namur, Tournai, Brabant, Saint-Gilles (Brussels, in 1889) ;

  • nursery schools, from 1848;

  • the Normal School of Pesche for primary and nursery teachers (1869);

  • the Normal School of nursery teachers in La Louvière (1910);

  • a middle school, technical and professional, in Saint-Gilles in 1932 and 1934.
